Rules: Market Swine

MARKET SWINE DIVISION

1. This division is subject to the general rules and regulations and to these division rules.

2. No market will be furnished by the show for non-placing hogs. Hogs not to be sold at auction must be removed from the swine barn starting after the judging is complete, but no later than time specified on Schedule of Events.

3. Any breed and crossbreed hogs – barrow or gilt – may be exhibited in the Market Swine show. No feral hogs will be allowed.

4. All market swine entries must be ear tagged in both ears at official tag-in at time specified on Schedule of Important Dates & Deadlines. An entry fee of $20.00 per entry must be paid at this time.

5. Market hogs must have both ear tags in ear when it comes to show. If the hog loses one tag, the exhibitor must immediately contact the Market Swine Committee Chairman. If the hog loses both ear tags, it will not be eligible to show. (In other words, if a hog loses a tag, exhibitors must contact one of the above mentioned persons to get the tag replaced before the second tag is lost.) (In other words, if a hog loses a tag, exhibitors must contact one of the above mentioned persons to get the tag replaced before the second tag is lost.)

6. Gilts entered in the Market Swine Division may be double entered in the Breeding Swine Division. A separate entry fee and entry form must be submitted for each division. Entry fees are not refundable.

7. Exhibitors will be allowed to enter as many hogs as they want. An entry fee of $20.00 per exhibitor will be charged per hog. Exhibitors will be permitted to show only one market hog. All exhibitors in the same family unit may enter more than one hog as a family unit group. Then the exhibitor may show any one of the hogs entered in his/her family unit group name. All exhibitors’ names that want to show must be included in the family group. An exhibitor must abide by all other rules to be eligible to show. Exhibitor will designate at time of weigh-in in April which animal he or she will exhibit. No substitutions will be allowed after the animal has been weighed.

8. Market hogs will be weighed upon arrival at the swine barn at specified time on Schedule of Events. Qualifying weights are 200-300 pounds, with zero tolerance. All market swine will have one opportunity to go across the official scales; if animal does not make the weight, the animal will be (at exhibitor’s request) backed off the scales, scales will be re-balanced, and animal will be re-weighted immediately. No weight tolerance will be allowed.

9. Market hogs will be divided into the five following weight classes: light, medium, light heavy, medium heavy, and heavy weight. The first eight (8) hogs placing in each class will sell at auction and will receive ribbons.

10. Chapters or Clubs will not be permitted to show in the Market Swine Show.

11. All hogs must have been owned and cared for by the exhibitor not later than official tag-in.

12. There will be no change of the major color pattern of the Market Swine by painting or dyeing. Any grooming material that allows color or oil to come off the animal will not be allowed to show. Only water will be permitted on the Market Swine.

13. Exhibitor/parent/guardian found to alter the weight of an animal on the scales during weigh-in will cause the animal to be disqualified.

14. ETHICS RULE: Each exhibitor, his or her parent(s) and/or guardian(s) agrees to abide by the General and Special Rules published in the current year’s Livestock Catalog and/or amendments available at Tag-In. Any violation of these rules or any exhibitor and/or parent(s) guardian(s) found to have participated in unethical practice – i.e. (1) approaching buyers for the purpose of asking to exchange, return or purchase any sale item(s), (2) the showing of any animal that has been administered any unapproved/unlabeled medication – will forfeit all privileges, awards, premiums won and will be barred from exhibiting at further Cleveland Livestock Shows.
