Rules: Home Economics


Home Eco

1. All school age participants must be in compliance with their school’s current policies concerning participation in extracurricular or other activities.

2. Exhibitors entering items must be enrolled in 4-H, FFA, FHA, curriculum art classes or home economic classes in Liberty County . Adult and Pee Wee exhibitors must reside in Liberty County.

3. All entries must be brought to the Senior Citizens Building on the Cleveland Livestock Show grounds on specified date in the Schedule of Events.

4. Entry fees are $2.00 per item for adults and $2.00 per item for students. Paper work plus entry fee is due into Cleveland Livestock Show, P.O. Box 697, Cleveland, Texas 77328 by/before entry deadline as specified on Schedule of Important Dates and Deadlines. After this date entries will be considered late and must pay an additional fee totaling $3.00 per item (student) and $3.00 per item (adult). Entry forms may be picked up at the County Extension Office or printed from the website. No refund of fees will be made.

5. The committee members will place entries in appropriate divisions and class and their decisions are final.

6. All entries will be assigned a number when entered. The exhibitor’s name will not be displayed during judging, but will be placed on the item prior to public viewing.

7. Participants may enter only one item per class.

8. All entries must be and can only be picked up at specific times listed in the Schedule of Events. Items not picked up by specified deadline dates will be taken to the County Extension Office in Liberty. The committee will dispose of items not picked up from the County Extension Office by specified deadline date.

9. Items or projects to be exhibited must have been completed between month of show time of preceding year to month of show time the current year and not previously exhibited at the Cleveland Livestock Show.

10. Entries will be judged in four divisions: Adult Division, Ages 19 and up; Senior Division, Ages 14-18; Junior Division, Ages 8-13; Peewee Division, Ages 4-8 (not enrolled in 3rd grade).

11. To be eligible to sell in the Youth Auction on Friday night, an exhibitor must be an active member of a 4-H club, FFA Chapter or enrolled in a high school or junior high school home economics class in Liberty County (excluding exhibitors from Dayton ISD). Home Economic items in the Auction must pay a $20.00 auction and 6% sale fee (entry fee previously paid will be deducted from this amount).

12. Only two food items will be sold during the youth Auction Friday the week of the show. These two items will be chosen from these divisions:

Grand Champion – Senior and Junior Food Division

Grand Champion – Decorated Cake Division (Junior or Senior)

Grand Champion – Bread (Junior or Senior)

Grand Champion – Pie (Junior or Senior)

Each participant may sell only one food item in the auction sale, regardless of the number of Grand Champion winnings. The two (2) exhibitors selling their items will be expected to prepare an exact fresh product to present to their respective buyers during the Youth Auction. A Home Economics Committee member will notify said exhibitors on Wednesday before the Auction. In the event a winning exhibitor is unable to prepare a fresh item, or chooses not to participate in the auction, the Alternate Grand Champion winner will have the opportunity to sell. (The above qualifications also apply to alternates.)

13. The Home Economics Committee has the right to combine classes in the event of an insufficient number of entries in a class, and to create a new class or classes if deemed necessary. All decisions of the committee will be final.

14. The Home Economics Committee has the right to refuse any entry that does not meet qualifications. Enhanced mixes (cake, corn bread, cookie or candy mixes, etc.) should be used and included in recipe.

15. NO COMMERCIAL EXHIBITS may be entered or displayed.

16. Exhibits will be watched. Every precaution will be taken to protect all exhibits, but in no case will the Cleveland Livestock Show be held responsible for loss, damage, theft, breakage and/or other forms of loss or damage. This includes all items left at the designated building during and immediately following the Cleveland Livestock Show.

17. All food entries will be offered for sale at time specified on Schedule of Events. The Home Economics Show Committee will price these items. Money received from the sale of individual food items, ribbons and trophies can be picked up at times specified on Schedule of Events ONLY. Claim tickets will be required to pick up items. All money collected for sales will be given to the respective participants at the time of entry pick up.

18. Any food item deemed unsafe for consumption will be discarded at any time during the fair at the discretion of the Home Economics Committee.

19. No food items requiring refrigeration or containing meat of any kind will be accepted.

20. All entries must be ‘show-ready” at time of entry. “Show ready” means: Clothing free of rips and tears, in good condition, well pressed and completely finished; Needlework, Bedding & Accessories – clean and completely finished including blocking, framing, etc.; Art mounted, ready for hanging and suitable for display; Crafts - completely finished and suitable for display. Food must be exhibited completely covered with plastic wrap and on a disposable plate. Complete recipe must be attached to each food item.

21. The two (2) youth auction participants will be required to write a “Thank You” letter to the Buyer of his/her entry.

 

FOOD DIVISION (Pee Wee, Junior, Senior & Adult)

Food must be exhibited with plastic wrap on a disposable plate. Display complete recipe with exhibit on a clean 3X5 card, without exhibitor’s name; item will not be accepted without complete recipe. Recipes will become the property of the Cleveland Livestock Show Home Economics Committee and will be used in media publicity and a recipe book. The Judges Committee will taste all food items.

Cookies and Candies: One Baker’s Dozen (13) constitutes an entry.

Class 5 – Uncooked Candy

Breads: (One loaf or one dozen constitutes an entry.) No Bread Machine bread will be considered for judging.

Class 6 – Biscuits

Class 7 – Cornbread

Class 8 – Quick Bread – Others

Class 9 – Yeast Bread

Class 10 – Desserts made with yeast

Class 11 – Plain Cup Cakes

Class 12 – Iced Cup Cakes

Cakes*:

Class 13 – Pound Cakes

Class 14 – Yellow and White Layer

Class 15 – Strawberry

Class 16 – Chocolate

Class 17 – Decorated**

Class 18 – German Chocolate

Class 19 – Miscellaneous

* All items in/on cake must be edible. Entries are limited to 20 X 20 inches including base and must have complete recipe entered with cake. Must be completely covered with Plastic Wrap.

** All decorated cakes will be tasted.

Pies: (No meringue, cream, or custard pies of any type needing refrigeration will be allowed.)

Class 59 – Large Potted Foliage plants 3” or larger

Class 60 – Small Potted Foliage plants smaller than 3”

Class 61 – Large Flowering Plants bloom size 3” or larger

Class 62 – Small Flowering Plants bloom size smaller than 3”

Class 63 – Cacti Succulents

Class 64 – Arrangements (may be purchased fresh or dried materials)

Class 65 – Compatible Planting (attractive 2+ plants/pot)


Home Economics Committee will not be responsible for any plant breakage or damage.
